Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me!

dont-go-to-the-cosmetics-counter-without-meNo one has heard of Paula Begoun? Has anyone read her books? “Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me,” “The Beauty Bible,” and others. I would love to know what you ladies think of her. She reviews all sorts of products based on the ingredients and shares what cheaper alternatives are based on ingredients not brand name. Anyone?

Never heard of her but am getting ready to inform myself about what she’s all about. thanks ahead of time.

I’ll have to check her out too!

Wow ladies! I assumed everyone had heard of her. I am glad I posted. She has some interesting stuff to say. Her site is www.paulaschoice.com and she has a really great email news letter where she answers people’s questions. I’ve learned a lot from her. Here’s an example of one of the lists she sent in the news letter about top drug store products:

  • 10 Best Drugstore Skin Care ProductsNeutrogena One Step Gentle Cleanser ($7.49 for 5.2 ounces) Notes:
Very good gentle cleanser that feels silky and completely removes all makeup; often stocked with Neutrogena makeup, not their skin care.
  • Olay Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin ($4.49 for 6.78 ounces) Notes: Very good fragrance-free water soluble cleanser for all skin types.
  • Eurcerin Calming Body Wash Daily Shower Oil ($7.99 for 8.4 ounces)Notes: An excellent moisturizing body wash for winter-dry skin or eczema. Fragrance-free.
  • Olay Quench Body Lotion Active Hydration Formula w/ Green Tea ($9.99 for 11.8 ounces) Notes:
Hands-down, one of the best body lotions anywhere due to its exemplary formula. It doesn’t leave skin greasy, either. Make sure you purchase the Green Tea formula, as it is the most state-of-the-art among the
    Quench moisturizers.
  • CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion ($12.99 for 12 ounces)Notes: Another top body lotion owing to its sophisticated formula that’s fragrance-free and great for dry, sensitive skin.
  • Alpha Hydrox Oil-Free Formula ($11.99 for 1.7 ounces)Notes: A fragrance-free, lightweight, pH-correct AHA product with 10% glycolic acid.
  • Olay Complete Ageless Skin Renewing UV Lotion SPF 20 ($24.99 for 2.5 ounces)Notes: There are few state-of-the-art daytime moisturizers with sunscreen at the drugstore. Although pricey, this certainly qualifies as a brilliant formula that competes with considerably more expensive SPF-rated facial
    moisturizers from the department store.
  • Physicians Formula Sun Shield for Faces Extra Sensitive Skin SPF 25 ($8.95 for 4 ounces)Notes: A gentle, mineral-based sunscreen that’s also fragrance-free. Great for rosacea-affected skin.
  • Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream, Night ($13.99 for 1.4 ounces)Notes: A very good nighttime moisturizer with retinol and antioxidants. Also fragrance-free. And yes, this is still being made even though
Neutrogena offers similar products on their Ageless line.
  • Stridex Power Pads ($6.99 for 28 pads)Notes: One of the only benzoyl peroxide/anti-acne products at the drugstore that doesn’t contain needless irritants.
  • 10 Best Drugstore Makeup ProductsL’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup SPF 17 ($10.95)Notes: Beautiful liquid foundation with broad-spectrum sun protection and a great range of mostly neutral shades for fair to dark skin tones.
  • L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder ($10.95)Notes: Everything a great pressed powder should be, at a very reasonable price plus beautiful shades.
  • Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector ($7.09)Notes: A long-wearing, crease-free liquid concealer on one end, subtle highlighter on the other.
  • Cover Girl TruBlend Liquid Makeup ($9.39)Notes: One of CG’s best foundations without sunscreen, it looks amazingly skin-like and lasts.
  • Revlon Cream Blush ($9.79)Notes: An excellent cream-to-powder blush that gives skin a lit-from-within glow.
  • Physicians Formula Matte Collection Quad Eyeshadow ($6.75)Notes: Smartly-coordinated sets with a smooth texture, good color payoff, and true matte finish.
  • Cover Girl Outlast Smoothwear All-Day Eyeliner ($6.99)Notes: A very good eye pencil with impressive longevity. Doesn’t need sharpening.
  • Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil ($5.49)Notes: No sharpening plus a smooth, soft application and flattering colors make this brow pencil a must-try.
  • Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara or Lash Blast Length ($8.99)Notes: Lash Blast in the orange tube gives ample thickness and length, while the one in the yellow tube provides less thickness but makes lashes inordinately long. Both are impressive.
  • Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick ($4.99)Notes: An inexpensive creamy lipstick that provides rich color and a finish that’s not overly slippery. Great shades, too.
  • 10 Best Drugstore Hair-Care Products Aveeno Nourish + Volumize Shampoo ($6.99 for 10.5 ounces)Notes:
Great shampoo that’s nearly identical to Aveeno’s Nourish + Moisture Shampoo. Both are good for normal to dry hair that’s slightly coarse, curly, or thick.Garnier Fructis Body Boost Fortifying Shampoo ($3.99 for 13 ounces)Notes: Excellent shampoo for all hair types, but especially good for fine hair.
  • JASON Natural Fragrance Free Daily Shampoo ($9.79 for 16 ounces) Notes: Although this contains a fragrant plant extract, the scent is subtle and doesn’t change the fact that this is a very good gentle shampoo for all hair types.
  • Garnier Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioning Cream ($3.99 for 10.2 ounces)Notes: A standard, but good leave-in conditioner for dry hair that’s comparable to much costlier products from Kerastase (Garnier and Kerastatse are owned by L’Oreal).
  • TRESemme Instant Heat Tamer Styling Spray ($4.75 for 8 ounces)Notes: Good lightweight, spray-on conditioner for those with fine or thin hair.
  • Pantene Nature Fusion Moisture Balance Conditioner ($4.99 for 12.6 ounces)Notes: Every Pantene conditioner is great (and they’re all similar) but this one has a subtle scent that doesn’t overpower. Use sparingly on fine or thin hair, lavishly on thick, coarse hair.
  • L’Oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss Conditioner, for Medium to Long Hair That’s Curly/Wavy ($4.99 for 13 ounces)Notes: Ignore the long/curly/wavy hair claim; this is a great conditioner for normal to dry hair of any thickness.
  • Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray, Ultra Strong ($3.99 for 8.25 ounces)Notes: This won’t completely shield hair from humidity and its hold isn’t ultra strong, but it works great as a finishing spray for all hair
    types.
  • Pantene Curl Defining Spray Gel, Extra Strong Hold ($4.99 for 6.5 ounces)Notes: A well-formulated styling spray for all hair types. Alcohol-free and loaded with helpful conditioning agents. Benefits curly or straight hair, especially if it is fine or thin.
  • Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream for Rebellious, Unmanageable Hair ($4.99 for 4 ounces)Notes: A great styling/straightening cream that also works to tame frizzies and add shine. Versatile, but too thin for those with very thick or coarse hair, who’d do better with a silicone serum or pomade, of which there are plenty of good ones available.

I’ve never read her books, but I did read an excerpt from Don’t Go…Without Me! & I liked her writing style & her approach to cosmetics purchasing. She seems quite knowledgeable. Thank you for bringing such interesting books to our attention. I now have 2 more titles for my next raid on the public library!

I have her “Beauty Bible” that someone gave me for Christmas last year and she reviews almost every product ever made that was out at the time she wrote the book.

That actually sounds like the book I mentioned. It has 30,000 product reviews of products in all categories and price ranges. I have the old one and am contemplating getting the new one. It’s available on Amazon for under $20.I also have the “Beauty Bible” which is fantastic because she talks about the most common ingredients one by one and which of them are irritants which helps tons because I have such sensitive skin.

Gelled Nails

Gentle care of nails in a beauty salonI’ve been having a hard time growing my nails so I was thinking of getting gelled nails but not sure if there better than Acrylic nails I’ve had acrylics done before and they have ruined my nails so I was thinking of getting gelled nails but don’t know much about them.

I am hoping to get opinions from someone that might know and where I should go to get them done like what type of salon.

I am really confused as to what you mean by “gelled” nails.. There are gel nails, which are pretty much acrylic only put on in gel form. It’s what people use who are allergic to acrylic, or who feel like paying more for something that is weaker than acrylic. Gel nails are no better for your nails than acrylic and it all depends on the nail technician and how under trained they are. There are gel polish for your nails which don’t add any strength to the actual nail and depending on the brand can do the same amount of damage as acrylics. I’m a nail technician, if you need more clarification or have another question please ask!

Sorry I mean gel my phone spelled it as gelled. Is gel less harmful to the nails then the acrylic nails is what I am asking.

No they aren’t. It takes the same prep steps as acrylic nails.

Side Effects of Acrylics Nails

acxrylicsFor Christmas I got a voucher to have my nails done at the local mall. Without thinking I ran down and had them done. The other night I was searching the net about nails and came across about the side effects of acrylics if done wrong.

Does anyone know if Elite Nails is a salon that uses the mma chemicals? I’ve had my nails done before but they never wore a mask, but this place did. Should I be worried?

As long as your not having a reaction around the acrylics-redness, itchiness, any discomfort, then they probably didn’t use the MMA. I’m told it has a nauseous, fruity smell. I never could smell it since most acrylic nail salons smell horrible anyway! The masks are more for filtering dust then protecting the technicians from MMA.

Just know that you’re going to have to go every 2 weeks for fill-ins, forever. This isn’t something you really want to do off and on. Your own nails will be ruined. Take it from somebody who has been there and done it, it’s not worth destroying your own nails over.

I’ve had my nails done for years now, and I’ve never had a problem with my nails being thin or anything like everyone on here has talked about. It may have to do with I don’t keep them on for long periods of time usually 2 months or so and I have mine removed. I didn’t notice any smell other than the usually smell from the acrylics.

Acrylics have nearly ruined my own nails. I tried for 5 years to find ANYONE who had a clue about what they were doing from first application to fill-ins to removal-no such luck. My own nails were ruined layer by layer each time.

Every time I had them removed or removed them myself-because I had lost all trust in anyone else like a nail technician to do it pain free. I took off one more layer. No matter how gentle you are with removing them, you still have to file and use acetone to actually start over. I was just sick and tired of it all. I’m done with the fakes. it’s all me now and it feels good.

Is there any way of removing the nails at home without any harsh chemicals and without doing very much damage to my own nail? I’ve had my nails for approximately 1 month. I like them but I am in a financial crunch and can’t afford to keep going for the fill ins. HELP ME PLEASE!

Acetone1The ONLY WAY to remove acrylic nails is with acetone polish remover. Don’t “pop” them off or you will lose layers of your own nail or worse. you have to soak them and soak them and the acrylic will become soft. You can do it at home very safely and there is nothing else that works for removing them.

If you really want to know the best way let me know and I will tell you. I’ve done it more times than I care to count and I’m done doing it! Your own nails will be weak underneath but they will survive.

I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing with me how you remove your nails and how long do you have to soak them for?

I certainly will! First you need pure acetone, a small glass bowl, a slightly larger plastic bowl and a file.

  1. Fill the glass bowl with enough acetone to cover the acrylics and set it over into the plastic bowl which you have filled with enough warm water to warm the acetone in the glass container. Acetone is very cold without warming it up first and warm seems to work “quicker”. Soaking can take as long as 10 to 20 minutes per nail.
  2. Soak for a few minutes and then take an orange stick and gently push on the acrylic to see if it’s softened up enough to start gently scraping layers off. As soon as you take them out of the acetone they will start hardening up so you have to move quickly. The longer you soak, the softer they will become.
  3. Do one at a time and as much as you want to “pop” them off just know that if you do you will lose layers of your own natural nail and your fingers will be incredibly sore afterwards.

It’s strong glue that holds them on. It takes time and patience to do this. Acrylics are a combination of chemicals and plastic and take a while to remove. When your done moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Your nail beds will very dehydrated.

Your nails will recover but it might take a few months. Acrylics are incredibly damaging to our natural nails and shouldn’t be thought of as something you can put on and remove every few months. If you want to wear acrylics then have them put on and keep them on for good, if not then don’t do it. I wish you luck and if you have any more questions please ask.

DIY Acrylic Nails

nailst14So yesterday I bought a ton of stuff to do my own acrylic nails. Does anyone else do their nails themselves?

Comments:

My daughter does hers but I watch her struggle when it comes to doing her right hand. Are you doing just the tips?

I used to do my own too, but my right hand always looked like shit because I am definitely NOT left handed

Yep that’s what Gee says too!

She gets a free day at school where they’re allowed to have someone to a procedure on them. I was trying to talk her into a Brazilian Wax. Oh Lord can you imagine!

She usually gets her nails done there. It’s so difficult to do them yourself. Sweetie if you do them, I’d love to see them when you’re finished. Then I’ll drop by and maybe you could do mine?

I’ve never used acrylics myself, good luck though!

I tried awhile ago.

Like years ago. And I could never get the hang of it. Now I barely paint my nails.

To start, apply a couple of layers of white nail polish. Wait for the nail polish to dry completely before continuing to beginning any layouts. After the white nail polish dries fully, utilize green nail polish and a striper brush to produce arbitrary, curvy lines over the whole nail.

A Successful Graduate In Nail Art

nailst19After making a career change from nursing to nails, Emma has made a huge success for herself in the industry. Her unique nail art style allows her to stand out from the crowd and offer her clients something very special.

For the past 15+ years I have been interested in all things arty and sparkly I went to college and gained my A levels in Art and Photography and also trained as a nurse.Yes a random mix I know!

But I always felt that putting my art onto someone’s hands would be amazing, so I decided to take up training as a Nail Technician. I started small with basic nail art onto natural nails using all kinds of nail polishes then I went onto gel nails with another training provider. After a while I discovered acrylic and fell in love with it and the fact you can do almost anything with it.

In the meantime I got married, at times I was home alone while my husband was away, and this is when I stumbled across a nail course website and decided to give them a try. To my amazement I discovered how amazing the course was and what made it even better was the fact you could spread the cost to make it a bit easier and also take your time to complete the course.

After gaining my qualifications in acrylics I went on to doing Airbrushing and the Master Technician courses which I passed with Distinctions

I am now a successful nail artist running my very own nail business. I’ve been featured in Scratch magazine and also came 1st in the Nails Valentine’s competition, 1st in the Halloween comp and 2nd in the Christmas 2013 comp. At present I’m working on my entry for UK Nail Tech 2014 held in May at Birmingham NEC.

We’ve now been posted to Windsor with the army, so now about to spread my talent in the south of the country.

If it wasn’t for the nail courses I would not be where I am today and for that I can’t thank you all enough
